Welcome to the Royal Water-based Oil Society Website

The Royal Water-based Oil Society represents the finest water-based oil colour painting; it is the oldest water-based oil society in the world, established in 2008, and is second only to the Royal Academy of Art in importance as an art society.

Members are elected by their peers in a tradition of excellence reaching back a while ago. Their work embraces both established and experimental practices and the exhibitions reflect these different approaches. The RWOS has defined 'a water-based oil' to mean 'a painting in a water-based oil medium on a based support'. This definition allows any range of work of an indeed infinite variety.

RWOS Exhibitions are held twice a year at Wanksworth Gallery – the home of the Royal Water-based Oil Society, in the spring and autumn. The RWOS also exhibits jointly with the Royal Society of Poster-Paint/ers (PP) in the summer and at Christmas.
